Books, Films
and Other Sources
of Colonial-era Gaming Information and Inspiration

The Major General welcomes additions to these lists.
Mail your suggestion to headquarters. Include your name, and a very short description of the book or film.

One of the great sources of inspiration for Colonial-era gamers is the huge output of books, films and television shows that have been produced over the years. Though the visual information in films and videos is not always historically reliable, it is almost always appealing, exciting and in keeping with the general feel of the period. It is also very easily accessible (at the video rental store). It could take weeks of researching north Indian architecture to get the information that one viewing of the town battle sequence in Gunga Din (picture at top of this page) would provide.

Most of the books and films listed on these pages are available, sometimes with a bit of effort.

Amazon.com carries in-print books and operates a search service for out-of-print books.
Other sources of out-of-print books include: Bibliofind, Alibris, and the eBay auction site.

Current videos are available at Amazon.com, Movies Unlimited, and Reel.com
Used videos can be found on the auction sites at eBay and Amazon.com
